Motion Amplification
Motion Amplification is a powerful video-based tool for localising vibrations in machinery, structure and pipework.
With motion amplification we can provide unique and valuable vibration assessment and root-cause problem-solving services to clients for many applications.
Motion amplification allows us to quickly localise a potential problem and provides the necessary insights to conclusively show the requirement for corrective actions. The insights provided by motion amplification surveys allow for a targeted approach in complex situations. Used in conjunction with with other measurement techniques such as ODS-/Modal analysis, strain gauge measurements etc, the results can be used at a later stage as input for FEA models.
Our solution
AVT Reliability BV (formerly Van Geffen Reliability) offers a broad range of field/vibration testing and consultancy in a wide range of structural analysis topics, motion amplification often forms a part of these services.
Accelerometers, displacement sensors, strain guages and modelling software are all valuable tools for diagnosing issues with machinery and structures but motion amplification is a resource for getting to the root cause of a problem that has many advantages:
- It’s fast and efficient
There is minimal set up involved and the capture process takes just seconds. - It is safe
Hands free measurements, eliminating the need for the analyst to touch the machine. - Reduced unplanned downtime
Motion amplification makes it incredibly easy to see faults enabling accurately planned and executed actions. - Provides actionable information
Seeing is believing. The results of motion amplification are produced in standard video format. This makes communicating machine conditions to those with limited vibration analysis knowledge easier, they can see how the machine or structure is moving during operation. - Diverse application
Motion amplification can be used on a wide variety of equipment including rotating machines, pumps, structures, process lines and piping. - Compliments root-cause analysis activities
The root cause of a machine issue is often visually apparent.
Offering
Motion Amplification is applied to quickly identify the source, location and impact of structural vibrations. AVT Reliability utilises this technology as either a stand-alone service (motion amplification survey) or as part of a comprehensive (vibration) research drawing on our extensive background in structural dynamics and our experience in advanced vibration analysis.
At AVT Reliability we offer two levels of motion amplification service:
Standard Motion Amplification Survey
This service includes a motion amplification survey, data processing and video presentation.
This survey is commonly used for
- Machinery and structure vibration troubleshooting e.g. foundation problems, baseplate issues, looseness, soft-foot, resonance etc.
- New machine commissioning for design validation.
- Machinery transient investigation e.g. start-ups and shutdowns.
- (Annual) Pipework vibration applications including small-bore connections.
Enhanced Survey
This service includes a motion amplification survey in combination with other tools and techniques to diagnose problems and provide recommendations for remedial work.
This survey is commonly used for
- Rotating equipment (fan, pump, compressor) with high operational vibration
- Vibration induced fatigue – cracking of structure, pipework or machine supports
- Pipework systems with high operational vibration (above Energy Institute recommended levels) due to inadequate pipe supports
