Geometrical Alignment

Geometric measurement technology spans an extremely wide field. From relatively simple straightness measurements to the more complicated right angle measurement of machine tools and turbines.

At AVT Reliability BV (formerly Van Geffen Reliability) we have specialised alignment engineers that can perform these measurements on-site. With our state of the art laser systems we can measure any deviations in the straightness or flatness of a foundation surface so accurately that deviations of < 0,01 mm are detected.

Our Solution

Our experienced team of alignment engineers offers a unique combination of specialist skills, expert knowledge, and high-end measurement equipment to deliver optimal outcomes for complex geometrical alignment challenges.

The service combines machinery knowledge, field experience, and advanced measurement capability, supported by high-level analysis, calculation, and simulation when required.

Practical and cost-effective

We focus on solutions that are workable on site and cost-effective in practice. For less common alignment problems, we engineer customised approaches to match the application and constraints.

Example application

Where functionality needs to be optimised, we combine elements from different measurement systems and techniques. For example, using shaft alignment systems together with laser transmitter techniques for flatness measurements and driveline straightness in marine applications.

Bearing support
Stern tube
Gearbox
Motor
Couplings

Depending on ship design, a propeller shaft driveline may consist of multiple sections and support points. In most cases the objective is to align components on a straight line, or to a predetermined curve, to achieve correct operating geometry and minimise load and wear.

Our Solution

Our alignment engineers combine specialist expertise with high-end measurement equipment, supported by analysis and simulation when required, to solve geometrical alignment challenges efficiently.

Example, marine driveline alignment

We can combine shaft alignment systems with laser transmitter techniques for flatness and driveline straightness, aligning components in a straight line or to a predetermined curve depending on vessel design.

We aim for practical, cost-effective solutions and can engineer customised approaches for less common alignment problems.

Offering

Measurement and engineering services delivered by experienced, involved and inspired engineers, with 24/7 service availability across a wide range of geometrical measurement applications.

Centerline bore and straightness measurement
Centerline bore / straightness

Full and half bore measurements are used to verify whether bore centre lines are correctly aligned with the machinery shaft centreline.

Any deviations are fully documented, enabling targeted corrective actions such as re-machining bores or adjusting bearing supports and diaphragms.

Using advanced laser measurement equipment, bore positions are measured in X and Y directions in a single run over distances up to 50 metres.

Typical applications

  • (Steam) turbines
  • Combustion engines
  • Reciprocating pumps and compressors
  • Gearboxes and propulsion shafts

Often combined with

  • Roundness and bearing play
  • Shaft deflection
  • Axial and radial runout

Parallelism

Transport and production systems rely on precise roller parallelism to maintain product quality and stability at increasing line speeds.

Potential consequences of misalignment

  • Product folds, cracks, or tracking issues
  • Increased friction and wear
  • Loss of product quality

Industries supported

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Steel
  • Food, film, and printing industries

Squareness flatness and level measurement
Squareness, flatness & level

The geometric accuracy of machinery and foundations directly affects achievable speed, alignment quality, and long-term reliability.

Typical applications

  • Transport systems and guidance tracks
  • Slewing ring bearings
  • Flanges, pipe spools, and crane structures
  • Foundations and support frames

Delivering

We work exclusively with modern, advanced, high-end measurement equipment to ensure accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency on every geometrical alignment project.

Fixturlaser NXA Geometry systems

Our Fixturlaser NXA Geometry full packages are highly versatile and include dedicated software modules for a wide range of straightness and flatness measurements.

  • Rectangular and circular flatness measurements for foundations and machine beds
  • Standard straightness measurements
  • Straightness measurements for full and half bore applications

Advanced large-scale measurement

Depending on the scope of the measurements and site conditions, Fixturlaser systems can be combined with Leica AT402 and AT403 Absolute Trackers. This allows high-accuracy measurements over large distances and complex geometries.

By selecting and combining the most suitable measurement technologies, we deliver reliable data that supports correct alignment decisions and long-term asset performance.

Delivering

We use only modern, high-end measurement equipment to guarantee accuracy and repeatability for geometrical alignment.

Fixturlaser NXA Geometry

  • Flatness for foundations and machine beds
  • Standard straightness
  • Full and half bore straightness

Where required, measurements are combined with Leica AT402 and AT403 Absolute Trackers for large-scale and complex applications.
